SHIPPING WEIGHT

Volumetric weight, know it before you pay for it.

Enter the dimensions and the actual weight to get the volumetric weight and the chargeable weight for divisors 5000 and 6000, with a comparison across divisors; multiple parcels are counted one by one and bulky goods can be forced to volumetric billing. Everything is computed locally in your browser.

Total chargeable weight

Billed on volumetric weight

The volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight, so shipping is charged on volume: shrinking the box saves more than losing weight.

Chargeable weight by divisor

Divisor Typical channel Volumetric (kg) Chargeable (kg) vs current choice
5000Most domestic couriers14.4014.400
6000International couriers, some freight12.0012.00-2.40
8000Some dedicated lines and large-pile shipping9.009.00-5.40

A larger divisor means a lighter volumetric weight and cheaper shipping for the same box; a smaller divisor costs more. Most domestic couriers use 5000, international couriers and some freight lines use 6000.

What can this tool do?

Volumetric weight is where people get overcharged: the bigger the box, the more space it takes, and shipping is billed on the larger of actual weight and volumetric weight. This page works out both from the dimensions and weight you enter, then lists the results for 5000, 6000 and 8000 side by side so you can see what switching channel would save. Multiple parcels are calculated one by one and then added up, and bulky goods can be forced to volumetric billing. All computation is local; no dimension or weight is uploaded.

FAQ

Which divisor should I use?

It depends on the carrier and channel: most domestic couriers use 5000 (some routes 6000 or actual weight only), international couriers commonly use 6000 or a rate per cubic metre, and freight forwarders each have their own rule. The safest move is to ask the seller for the divisor of that channel, then compare both here.

Why is my actual weight lower than the waybill?

Because couriers mostly bill on volumetric weight: a light, bulky parcel may weigh only 2 kg, but a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box gives 4.8 kg with a divisor of 5000, so that is what you are charged. Shrinking the packaging volume saves more than losing weight.

Example & notes

A worked example

Shipping a 60 × 40 × 30 cm foam box weighing 3 kg: with a divisor of 6000 the volumetric weight is 12 kg, so the chargeable weight is 12 kg. Switch to 5000, which most couriers use, and the volumetric weight becomes 14.4 kg - the bill jumps.

More Q&A

Which divisor should I use?

It depends on the carrier and the channel: most domestic couriers use 5000 (some routes 6000 or actual weight only), international couriers commonly use 6000 or a rate per cubic metre, and freight forwarders each have their own rule. Why is my actual weight lower than the waybill?

Because couriers mostly bill on volumetric weight: a light, bulky parcel may weigh only 2 kg, but a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box gives 4.8 kg with a divisor of 5000, so that is what you are charged.
