GANZHI · 60 JIAZI

The 60 Jiazi and the five elements, one table for everything.

Ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches pair up into sixty combinations — the backbone of the Chinese sexagenary cycle. This page lists the five-element attributes, zodiac animals, hours and directions of every stem and branch, the full 60-pair table with na-yin, and the fixed liu-he, san-he, chong and xing correspondences. Enter a birthday to get the four pillars and a plain count of the five elements.

The 60 combinations come from advancing one stem and one branch together; the least common multiple of ten and twelve is 60, so the cycle repeats every sixty years. Na-yin is the traditional name given to the element pair of each combination.

How to use

Pick any stem or branch in “Stem and branch attributes” to see its element, polarity, animal, hour, direction and the stems or branches it combines with, clashes with or forms a penalty with. “The 60 Jiazi” gives the complete table with na-yin. “Four pillars and element count” takes a birthday and hour and returns the four pillars plus a count of the five elements.

FAQ

How are the 60 combinations arranged?

The ten stems and the twelve branches each advance one step at a time. Because the least common multiple of ten and twelve is 60, the pairings return to the start after sixty years — one full sexagenary cycle.

Does a missing element mean bad luck?

This page only counts. Traditional Chinese astrology does talk about balance and imbalance, but that system needs strength, season and luck cycles to interpret, which this tool does not attempt and which you should not read into a bare count.

Are the branch months and hours fixed?

Yes — they are fixed traditional correspondences: the Zi hour runs from 23:00 to 00:59, and the Yin month corresponds to the first lunar month (roughly February). What you see here is that traditional mapping, not the precise solar-term based month boundaries.

Will this tell me what is auspicious?

No. The page lists fixed traditional correspondences between stems and branches — cultural reference material — without any fortune telling or verdict of any kind.

Example & notes

A worked example

Looking up Jia-Zi: pick the stem “Jia” and the branch “Zi”. The page shows Jia as wood, yang, east, combining with Ji (Jia-Ji is earth); Zi as water, yang, the Rat, holding the Zi hour from 23:00 to 00:59, combining with Chou, clashing with Wu, harming Wei and forming a penalty with Mao.

More Q&A

Is the na-yin attribution accurate?

Na-yin is a fixed traditional pairing and does not always match the element of the pair itself (Jia-Zi is water, yet its na-yin is “metal in the sea”). The page lists the traditional pairing as-is, without reconciling the two.

Can I use this to judge my fortune?

No. This page only does calendar and cultural-reference lookups and offers no astrological judgement; for that, please consult a qualified professional.
